Flag Football Rolls Through Ventura Tournament

The Ventura College flag football team rolled to four wins Thursday in the first ever Ventura Tournament at the Sportsplex. The Pirates defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara in pool play before winning against East Los Angeles and Oxnard in the championship rounds. Quarterback Ava Ortman again directed the potent Pirate attack with Honest Watson, Smitty Smith, Analysia Brewer, Tanaya Moreno and Sienna Angell all scoring multiple touchdowns in the four games.

Ventura's do-everything wide receiver and defensive back Honest Watson had two touchdown receptions and two interceptions Wednesday against Oxnard while also scoring on a 50-yard punt return. The Pirates defeated the Condors 46-6.
Flag Football Continues Impressive Run

The VC flag football team won its 10th straight game Wednesday by a 46-6 count against Oxnard. Honest Watson turned in a dynamic performance catching two touchdown passes, grabbing a pair of interceptions and returning a punt for a touchdown to lead VC (12-2). Ava Ortman had four touchdown passes and Sienna Angell recorded a pick-6 in the game. Wednesdays victory was the Pirates' eighth straight by at least a 20-point margin with at least 32 points on the scoreboard.

Pirate Flag Football Runs Away from Saddleback

The Ventura College Flag Football team had little trouble with visiting Saddleback Friday, scoring the first four touchdowns of the day in their runaway 48-18 victory over the Bobcats. Ava Ortman threw seven touchdown passes in the game as VC made up for a loss to Saddleback in the second game of the season. Analysia Brewer and Honest Watson each had a pair of touchdwon receptions for the Pirates (11-2).

Pirates Score "6-7," Blank East Los Angeles

The "nonsensical" pop-culture expression 'six, seven' made perfect sense Wednesday at the VC Sportsplex as the Pirates' flag football team scored 'six, seven' against East Los Angeles in their shutout win. Ventura competely overmatched the Huskies scoring 10 touchdowns in the rout. Smitty Smith was VC's do-everything player with a touchdown pass, two touchdown receptions, a run to paydirt and two catches for PAT's in the game. Quarterback Ava Ortman tossed five scoring strikes while Honest Watson and Tanaya Moreno each had a pair of touchdown receptions.

Pirate Flag Football Easily Defeats Norco

The VC flag football team easily defeated Norco College on the road Tuesday, 52-6. Ava Ortman had six touchdown passes and another run to paydirt to lead Ventura while Analysia Brewer recorded three touchdown receptions, two from Ortman and one from Smitty Smith. Smith, meanwhile, had a touchdown reception and a touchdown pass and also grabbed an interception on defense. Sami Nava grabbed a pair of Oskies defensively.

Explosive Second Quarter Leads to VC Victory over Irvine

The VC flag football team scored four touchdowns in the second quarter en route to a 51-34 victory over Irvine Valley Monday at the Sportsplex. Ava Ortman had seven passing touchdowns in the game, four to Honest Watson, to lead the effort. Smitty Smith, Sienna Angell and Analysia Brewer also caught scoring strikes from Ortman while Smith also had a touchdown pass to Alyssa Ballesteros for the Pirates (8-2).

Pirates Rout Cal Lu, 45-8

The VC flag football team gave Cal Lu a beating Thursday, defeating the Regals 45-8 in Thousand Oaks. Ava Ortman threw six touchdown passes while Tanaya Moreno caught two passes for scores and pulled in three interceptions in the decisive second quarter for the Pirates (7-2). Honest Watson hauled in three touchdown passes and ran to paydirt for another score in addition to an interception return to the house on a PAT attempt for two points.

VC Runs Away from Irvine Valley, 32-12

The VC flag football team ran away from Irvine Valley Wednesday, posting a 32-12 victory over the Lasers. Quarterback Ava Ortman threw four touchdown passes, two each to Smitty Smith and Honest Watson. Smith also had a touchdown pass to Sami Nava. Tanaya Moreno and Alyssa Ballesteros each grabbed an interception defensively in the Pirate victory.

Pirates Rout East Los Angeles in Return Engagement

Four days after a once score game against East Los Angeles at the Saddleback Tournament, the Pirates' flag football team had a return engagement with the Huskies in Monterey Park Tuesday. Ventura left no doubt to the outcome, scoring first on a "pick-six" en route to a 45-6 road win. Six different Pirates scored touchdowns and quarterback April Luna had five passing scores leading to the triumph.

Pirates Win Three of Four at Flag Football Tourney

The VC flag football team won three of four games Friday at the Bobcat Bowl Tournament at Saddleback College. The Pirates were 2-1 in pool play, defeating MiraCosta and Golden West before besting East Los Angeles to claim third place on the day. Honest Watson had an outstanding day on offense and defense Smitty Smith and Ava Ortman also played well. Sophia Moran and Tanaya Moreno stood out on both sides of the ball for Ventura (4-2).

Flag Football Drops Close Decision at Saddleback

The VC flag football team had a solid defensive effort Wednesday at Saddleback, but could not generate enough offense in their 15-12 setback. Tanaya Moreno and Honest Watson each scored touchdowns for the Pirates and Sami Nava grabbed an interception for the Pirates.

The VC flag football team played its first-ever game Thursday, defeating Santa Barbara 33-14 at the VC Sportsplex. Quarterback Ava Ortman had five touchdown passes in the game with Smitty Smith pulling in three touchdown receptions and Honest Watson hauling in a pair of passes resulting in scores. The Pirate defense also had a strong outing, holding the Vaqueros without an offensive score until late in the fourth quarter.

Colman Named VC Flag Football Head Coach

Long time Pirate football assistant and Ventura College alumnus Jake Colman '17 has been named as the head coach for the newly created VC Pirate Women's Flag Football team. Colman will direct the new program as it enters off-season workouts in the fall of 2025. This spring, Southern California community colleges and 4-year universities with women's flag football programs are participating in the inaugural So Cal College Flag Football League.  VC plans on joining the league in Spring 2026 under the direction of Colman.

VC Athletics Looking to add Women's Flag Football in 2025-26

The Ventua College Athletic Department is planning to begin intercollegiate women’s flag football in the 2025-26 academic year.  The current plan will begin with an off-season program in the fall of 2025 and a full schedule of games in the spring of 2026.
